William Holt Averell (1794-1873) of Cooperstown, New York

Son of James Averell, Jr. and Marcy Holt Averell. He was born in Cooperstown, New York in 1794. As a young man, he assisted with his father’s store and tannery business. He was prepared for more advanced studies at the Fairfield Academy in Connecticut. Averell eventually received his A.B. from Union College in 1816 and then attended the Litchfield Law School in 1817.  He married Jane Russell in 1829 at Claverack, New York. She died only four years later in Cooperstown in 1833. Averell was more actively involved with business and banking than with legal practice during his lifetime. He was the director of the Otsego County Bank, which later became First National, from 1830 until his death in 1873.

Czech-born American stage actress. Arrived in the United States in 1867 and first performed at the Academy of Music in New York City, on October 9, 1867, managed by Max Maretzek. She spoke no English, only German and often worked with all English speaking casts.

United States World War II Victory Medal 1946

The World War II Victory Medal was awarded for service between 7 December 1941 and 31 December 1946, both dates inclusive, with no minimum time in service requirement.

Bronze medal is 1 1⁄2 inches in width. The obverse is a figure of Liberation standing full length with head turned to dexter looking to the dawn of a new day, right foot resting on a war god’s helmet with the hilt of a broken sword in the right hand and the broken blade in the left hand, the inscription WORLD WAR II placed immediately below the centre. On the reverse are inscriptions for the Four Freedoms: FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND WANT and FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND RELIGION separated by a palm branch, all within a circle composed of the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1941 1945.
