Joanna of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany 1547-1578

Joanna of Austria was born an Archduchess of Austria as the youngest daughter of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, and Anna of Bohemia and Hungary. By marriage, she was the Grand Princess of Tuscany and later the Grand Duchess of Tuscany. One of her daughters was Marie de Medici, second wife of King Henry IV of France.

Duke of Lorraine, known as “the Great”. He took part in the civil wars of France and in 1588 joined the Catholic League. In 1559 he married Claudia, daughter of the French king Henry II of Valois (1519-1559). His daughter Cristina (1565-1636) married Ferdinando I de’ Medici (1549-1609), Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany 1642-1723

The penultimate Medici Grand Duke of Tuscany. He reigned from 1670 to 1723, and was the elder son of Grand Duke Ferdinando II. Cosimo’s 53-year-long reign, the longest in Tuscan history, was marked by a series of ultra-reactionary laws which regulated prostitution and banned May celebrations.
