Louis Charles Victor de Riquet de Caraman 1762-1839

Louis Charles Victor de Riquet de Caraman is the older brother of Maurice Gabriel (1765-1835), Count of Caraman, and François Joseph, Duke of Caraman. He distinguished himself early in his diplomatic career. His family took him on trips to the main parts of Europe for this purpose. Mr. de Vergennes, Minister of External Relations, had recommended it to his diplomatic agents: it was also well received by Frederick the Great, Joseph II, and Catherine II. He became close with Prince Kaunitz, Potemkin, Poniatowski, Pitt and Fox. He met the Count of Saint-Priest in Constantinople. His travels lasted five to six years. Returning to France, in 1785 he married Mademoiselle de Mérode Westerloo, from a prominent Dutch family, and while waiting for a mission abroad, followed a military career.
