Albertus II, Holy Roman emperor 1397-1439 Archduke of Austria

Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor 1578-1637

Ferdinand II, a member of the House of Habsburg, was Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia, and King of Hungary. He was the son of Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria, and Maria of Bavaria. In 1590, his parents, who were devout Catholics, sent him to study at the Jesuits’ college in Ingolstadt, because they wanted to isolate him from the Lutheran nobles. He fought in the Thirty Years’ War first as an officer in the army of the Habsburg emperor and then as a senior lieutenant of his own Bavarian regiment under Johan t’Serclaes van Tilly. During the Austrian peasant uprising of 1626-1628 he played a mediating role.”

Charles V, Duke of Loraine & Barri 1643-1690

Charles V, Duke of Lorraine and Bar succeeded his uncle Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine as titular Duke of Lorraine and Bar in 1675; both duchies were occupied by France from 1634 to 1661 and 1670 to 1697.
Born in exile in Vienna, Charles spent his military career in the service of the Habsburg monarchy. He played an important role in the 1683–1696 Turkish War, which reasserted Habsburg power in southeast Europe, and ended his life as an Imperial Field Marshal.
