Johann Michael was a member of the noble Althann family, son of Michael Johann von Althann and his wife Princess Maria Theresa of Liechtenstein. Inducted into the court, he became imperial chamberlain, privy councilor and finally, from 1716 to 1722, Oberststallmeister on behalf of Emperor Charles VI of the Holy Roman Empire. Although he had not held high-profile positions at court, his figure was particularly significant and had considerable influence as the emperor’s favourite.
