Eduard von Bach 1814-1884


Baron Eduard von Bach was a son of the lawyer Michael Bach; his brothers were the composer Otto Bach and the politician Alexander von Bach. Bach studied at the University of Vienna, among other things. Cameral Sciences and, after successfully completing it, got a job in the state administration. Bach received his first major task in 1846 when he was appointed district captain in Galicia and Bukovina. He held this position for over two years. In mid-1849 he was appointed civil commissioner to Transylvania until the end of 1850. Eduard was raised to the rank of baron with the same coat of arms as a bearer of the Order of the Iron Crown 1st Class and in recognition of his services in 1854, shortly after the appointment of his brother Alexander .

Franz Moritz von Lacy 1725-1801

Franz Moritz Graf von Lacy was a Baltic German-born Austrian military leader, he was the son of Count Peter von Lacy and was a famous Austrian field marshal. He served during the reign of Maria Theresa and was a close friend to Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor, becoming one of the latter’s advisers.

Prince Frederick Josias of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld 1737-1815

In 1793/4, Prince Josias was the principal Commander of the Austrian forces in the Netherlands and one of Britain’s allies during the War of the First Coalition against revolutionary France. Along with General Count Clairfayt, he won major victories at Aldenhoven and Neerwinden against Dumouriez, and it was he who selected the newly-arrived Duke of York to command the siege operations against Valenciennes.

Johann Fernberger von Aur 1511-1584

Imperial troop leader, born in 1511 in Aur an der Etsch, 1584 as mayor of Vienna. The son of a landsknecht and growing up without any schooling, F. chose a career as a soldier, was enlisted in the imperial occupation troops in Italy in 1530 and subsequently took part in the war against Francis 1 of France. Sent to the army in Hungary in 1540, he was wounded in a bloody but unsuccessful attack on Ofen and was taken prisoner by the Turks in a later battle. After he had freed himself again by paying a ransom, he came to this again in the Milanese war

Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, Prince of Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein known as Klemens von Metternich or Prince Metternich, was a conservative Austrian statesman and diplomat who was at the center of the European balance of power known as the Concert of Europe for three decades as the Austrian Empire’s foreign minister from 1809 and Chancellor from 1821 until the liberal Revolutions of 1848 forced his resignation.
