King Charles II Irish coinage, silver, by George Bower

506a506

Charles II, Pattern Halfcrown for an Irish coinage, silver, undated, by George Bower, laureate bust left, CAROLVS A CAROLO, rev., crowned harp within Garter, 34mm (MI 599/285). Strictly fine but extremely rare.
The puncheon for the image is the same as that on the Samuel Morland medal of 1681 (MI 582/258), a piece which MI does not hesitate to attribute to George Bower. That it is not struck “en médaille” (ie with a top common to both sides), does seem to point it to being a pattern coin; however if it is it has no official status.

William Laud 1573-1645 Archbishop of Canterbury

3111
Laud prospered under the patronage of the Duke of Buckingham and was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1633. He supported the political and religious policies of Charles I and carried out Strafford’s policy of ‘Thorough’ in ecclesiastical affairs, working for uniformity of doctrine and practice. His attempt to impose uniformity on the church provoked armed resistance in Scotland. Parliament impeached and imprisoned him in 1640-1 and he was beheaded in 1645.
