Charles VI succeeded his elder brother, Joseph I, as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia, King of Hungary and Croatia, Serbia and Archduke of Austria in 1711. He unsuccessfully claimed the throne of Spain following the death of his relative, Charles II.

Bust length portrait in profile, facing right, wearing laurel crowns and mantles. The portraits sit within a circular frame, within which is the Latin inscription ‘LEOPOLDUS ET IOSEPHUS D.G. IMPER. ET REX ROM. P.H.M.’ The frame sits upon a pedestal bearing the French inscription ‘L’Empereur et le Roy des Romains.’ The publisher’s inscription sits at the bottom of the plate

Maximilian II. Holy Roman emperor 1527-1576

Maximilian II, a member of the Austrian House of Habsburg, was Holy Roman Emperor from 1564 until his death. He was crowned King of Bohemia in Prague on 14 May 1562 and elected King of Germany on 24 November 1562. On 8 September 1563 he was crowned King of Hungary and Croatia in the Hungarian capital Pressburg.
