Charles de Lorraine, duke de Mayenne 1554-1611

French nobleman of the house of Guise and a military leader of the Catholic League, which he headed during the French Wars of Religion, following the assassination of his brothers at Blois in 1588. In 1596, when he made peace with Henry IV of France, the wars were essentially at an end.

Johann Rudolph Wertmuller 1614-1677

Hans Rudolf Werdmüller was born in Zurich, the son of the wealthy silk merchant Johann Rudolf Werdmüller and his wife Barbara Wydenmann. He entered the service of the Swedish general Gustaf Horn in the Thirty Years’ War in 1633 and participated in the siege of Constance and the Battle of Nördlingen. In the same year, at the family’s request, he married Anna Reinhard, the daughter of a nobleman, who was 14 years his senior.
