Don Juan of Austria 1547-1578

 

Spanish admiral and governor, known to Elizabethans as Don John. Born in Regensburg, Germany, to commoner Barbara Blomberg, Don Juan, the natural son of Emperor Charles V, was brought to Brussels, where his mother married. In 1550 Charles had the boy, called Jeromín, taken to Spain by a servant couple, and then, in 1554, transferred to the castle of his chief of household, Don Luis de Quijada, and his wife, Doña Magdalena de Ulloa, at Villagarcía de Campos.

Eleonora Gonzaga 1598-1655

Eleonora Gonzaga was born a princess of Mantua as a member of the House of Gonzaga, and by marriage to Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor, was Holy Roman Empress, German Queen, Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. Nicknamed the Elder (German: Ältere) to distinguish herself from her namesake great-niece, during her tenure, the Imperial court in Vienna became one of the centers of European Baroque music. As empress, Eleanora was a supporter of the Counter-Reformation.

Gaspar de Bracamonte, 3rd Count of Peñaranda 1595-1676

Bracamonte was born in 1595 in Peñaranda de Bracamonte, Spain. He married his niece Maria de Bracamonte, daughter of his older brother Balthazar Emmanuel, and 3rd Countess of Peñaranda. They had one son, Gregory, 4th Count of Peñaranda, who died without legitimate heirs in 1689

Ferdinand Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua 1587-1626

Born in Mantua, he was the son of Vincenzo I and Eleonora de’ Medici.
Succeeded his brother in both the Duchy of Mantua and the Duchy of Montferrat. In 1616 he secretly married Camilla Faà di Bruno, whom he divorced in the same year. Their son Francesco Giacinto Teodoro Giovanni Gonzaga, although accepted at court, was not made Ferdinando’s heir. He died of the plague at the age of 14, during the 1630 siege of Mantua. On 16 February 1617 Ferdinando married Caterina de’ Medici (1593–1629), the daughter of Ferdinand I, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
