Pierre de Gondi, 1533-1616. Cardinal, Bishop of Paris

Born in Lyon, he was a brother of Albert de Gondi (two of whose sons, Henri and Jean-François, succeeded Pierre as bishop of Paris) and a protégé of Catherine de Médicis. In turn, he became bishop of Langres (1565), bishop of Paris (1570), chancellor and grand almoner to Elisabeth of Austria, wife of Charles IX of France.

Prince Bishop of Trento. Domenico Antonio was accused of having a greater dedication to the enjoyment of life and revelry than to the spiritual and temporal government of the principality. He was in fact guilty of being a “frequent frequenter of taverns, not averse to excessive familiarity with persons of the opposite sex, a lover of profane discourses and libertine songs, a devoted guest of the Venice carnival, where he went with his court of revealers and freeloaders”

Cardinal Angelo Maria Querini 1680-1755

Quirini’s writings include many works on the history of the Church, of Corfu, and of Brescia, as well as a five-volume edition of the correspondence of Cardinal Reginald Pole. In Brescia, he founded in 1745 the Biblioteca Queriniana, which still exists today, and he sponsored the German missions. He also financed the completion of the St. Hedwig Church in Berlin, which is today the cathedral of the archbishopric of Berlin.
