Pope Benedict XIII, 1649-1730

Pope Benedict XIII, born Pietro Francesco Orsini and later called Vincenzo Maria Orsini, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 29 May 1724 to his death in February 1730. A Dominican friar, Orsini focused on his religious responsibilities as bishop rather than on papal administration.

Joseph Clemens Cajetan of Bavaria (born December 5, 1671, in Munich; died November 12, 1723, in Bonn) was Archbishop of Cologne from 1688 to 1723, Elector of the Holy Roman Empire, ruler of the Archbishopric of Cologne, and Archchancellor of Imperial Italy, as well as holder of other princely episcopal sees and ecclesiastical dignities. His election as Archbishop of Cologne, secured by the Emperor and the Pope against the interests of Louis XIV, was one of the triggers for the War of the Palatine Succession.

Pierre de Gondi, 1533-1616. Cardinal, Bishop of Paris

Born in Lyon, he was a brother of Albert de Gondi (two of whose sons, Henri and Jean-François, succeeded Pierre as bishop of Paris) and a protégé of Catherine de Médicis. In turn, he became bishop of Langres (1565), bishop of Paris (1570), chancellor and grand almoner to Elisabeth of Austria, wife of Charles IX of France.
