Levin August von Bennigsen 1745-1826

German general in the service of the Russian Empire. Bennigsen made a name for himself in Russian history as the man who fought Napoleon Bonaparte with distinction at the Battle of Eylau; but, suffering from ill-health, he was then defeated at Friedland several months later. Bennigsen also played a pivotal role in decisively defeating Napoleon in the War of the Sixth Coalition.

Humprecht Jan Czernin 1628-1682


Humprecht Jan Czernin was the Habsburg imperial ambassador to Venice and Rome. He was appointed ambassador of King Leopold in Venice in 1659.
Humprecht died at the castle in Kosmonosy on 3 March 1682 at the age of 54 years. He was buried in the chapel of St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, but his heart was placed in a tin box and placed in the Czernin Chapel of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Stará Boleslav. The Czernin Palace was commissioned by him in the 1660s. He had also the Humprecht Castle in Sobotka built, named after him. It was built as his summer house and hunting castle in 1666–1668.

Jean François Paul de Gondi, Cardinal de Retz 1613-1679

French churchman, writer of memoirs, and agitator in the Fronde.
The Florentine banking and noble Gondi family had been introduced into France by Catherine de’ Medici; Catherine offered Jérome (Girolamo) de Gondi in 1573 the château that he made the nucleus of the Château de Saint-Cloud; his hôtel in the Faubourg Saint-Germain of Paris became the Hôtel de Condé in the following generation. The Gondi acquired great estates in Brittany and became connected with the noblest houses of the kingdom.
