Sigmund Adam was a son of Johann Bernhard von Traun of the Maissau line, from his marriage to Maria Freiin von Auersperg. He initially served Archduke Matthias at court (as cupbearer), became a Lower Austrian Estates Councilor in 1623, and then Emperor Ferdinand II’s Chamberlain, Privy Councilor, Lord High Steward, and President of the Imperial Treasury. Later, he became Land Marshal and General of the Land in Lower Austria, dying in the latter rank at the age of 65. Around 1630, Sigmund Adam was forced to sell the Traun estate and castle to Werner t’Serklaes von Tilly, the nephew of Field Marshal Johann t’Serclaes von Tilly. In 1635, he acquired Bockfließ Castle from Count Franz Christoph Khevenhüller.
